If you want to know how to open APK files on PC, I just have to take a few minutes of free time and read the instructions that I am going to give you. In fact, in today’s guide, I will show you how to perform this procedure on both Windows and macOS, recommending several solutions.
Going into more detail, I will tell you about the official Google software, Android Studio, which allows you to design Android applications and view their content in detail. If, on the other hand, your goal is to install an Android application on your PC, through its APK, you will find the Android Pc emulator useful, which I will point out in the second part of the guide.
Open APK files on PC with Android Studio
An APK file is a file that contains the files necessary to install an application on Android. In this sense, Android Studio free software, developed by Google, can be used to design applications.
Therefore, this program allows you to decompile an APK file and view its contents. If you are interested in Android Studio, I recommend that you go to the official website and click the Download Android Studio button, located in the middle of the website.
On the next screen, put a checkmark in the box below and hit the Download Android Studio button.
Doing so will download the file .exe for Windows or dmg for macOS. After downloading the file, if you’re using Windows, double-click it and hit Yes, in User Account Control.
On the screen that appears, press the Next button three times consecutively, and at the end of the installation, press the finished button.
If you’re using MacOS, double-click the downloaded file instead and, on the screen that appears, drag Android Studio into the Applications folder.
After that, start Android Studio via its icon on the Windows desktop or in the Launchpad for macOS. Then press the accept button on the screen you see, click the Next button three times in a row and wait for the download of all the necessary components for the program to work. When done, click done to display the Android Studio main screen.
Among the items displayed on the screen panel, select the one called Open an existing Android Studio project and, on the screen, you are viewing, select the APK file of your interest, confirming with the Open button.
If you have followed the instructions I have provided, you will have successfully opened the APK file, displaying all the files within it, in the central panel of the Android Studio main screen.
Open APK files on PC via Android emulator
If you want to run an Android application on your PC, you must use an Android Emulator: like BlueStacks, a famous free Android emulation software downloadable on Windows and macOS, through its official website.
To download BlueStacks on your PC, go to the link I provided just now, press the Download BlueStacks button and on the next screen, click the download button.
After downloading the program installation file (in .exe format on Windows or in dmg format on macOS), double-click it and follow the procedure displayed on the screen.
In Windows, press up on Yes in the User Account Control window and click the Install Now button. Now, wait for the installation procedure to complete and hit the complete button.
On MacOS, instead, double-click the BlueStacks icon on the screen that is shown to you, and then hit the open button. Now, you see the new screen, click continue and then install, type the password for Mac and you press the Setup Wizard. At the end of the installation procedure, press the Open System Preferences button, click allow and then press the icon with the padlock on the bottom left. At this point, type in the Mac password and hit the button Unlock.
After starting BlueStacks, you will be asked to set up a Google account. Then press the start button and log in with your Gmail account credentials, following the on-screen procedure. At this point, press the Start using BlueStacks button to start using the Android emulator.
Now that you have installed and configured BlueStacks, you can open an APK file with ease. On the main screen of the emulator, look for Installed Applications, located in the upper left corner. Then click on the ⋮ icon next to it and, in the box you see, select Install APK.
At this point, through the screen that is shown, you just have to look for the APK file on the PC and select it, confirming the operation with the open button. Doing so will install the APK file and it will be possible to run the application it contains.
As an alternative to this procedure, after installing and configuring BlueStacks, you can simply double-click the APK file to open it and thus install it within the emulator.
Extract APK files on PC
An APK file can be opened on a PC with any data storage software or tool such as WinRAR or WinZip.
Try the free program. 7- Zip, available only on Windows. However, as it is open-source software, its main development code ( p7zip ) is used for the creation of other software, also free, such as Keka, for MacOS.
If you have a Windows PC, among the many programs to compress and extract files, I recommend that you use 7-Zip, available for free through the official website. It is an open-source program that allows you to manage files with RAR, CAB, GZIP, 7Z, ZIP, and even APK extensions.
If you are interested in using 7-Zip, please go to the link I provided and click on the download item, corresponding to the version of the IT architecture.
Once this is done, once the download of the .exe file is complete, double-click on it and press yes, in the Windows User Account Control window. At this point, on the screen that is displayed, click the install button, and at the end of the procedure, press the close button.
To open an APK package and extract its contents on the PC, right-click on the file and, in the context menu, select the items 7-Zip> Extract the files.
You will be shown a screen in which you must select the destination to which to extract the content of the APK file. Hit the Accept button to start extracting the files, and in a few seconds, you’re good to go.
Keka is free software for macOS that allows you to manage compressed files, such as those in RAR, ZIP, 7Z, and APK formats, with the possibility of extracting their contents on the PC to any destination selected by the user.
If you are interested in downloading it on your Mac, go to its official website and click the Download vx.xx button, which you find on the left. You can also download it directly from the Mac App Store, but in that case, a payment of $ 1.99 is required (to support its development).
After grabbing the Keka dmg file, open it and drag the program into the macOS applications folder to complete the installation. Its icon will be available on the Launchpad in case you want to access the main Keka screen, but this procedure is not required to open an APK file.
What you need to do is simply go to the location where the APK file is present and double click on it. Doing so will show you a screen to select the destination where to extract the content of the APK file. Choose the folder on the Mac and hit the extract button located at the bottom right.
If you have performed the procedure correctly, you will find the contents of the APK file inside a folder in the destination you selected.
If Keka doesn’t open automatically when you double-click the APK file, right-click the package to extract and select the Open With> Keka rumors from the macOS context menu.
In case of errors when running the software, go to the Applications folder and start it by right-clicking on its icon and selecting the open item twice in a row. This operation is required only at the first start and serves to bypass macOS restrictions in applications from non-certified developers.
